The increasing cost of prison transports was a concern for the Corrections Commission of northwest Ohio, during their meeting today (wed.). There are 33 prisons around the Buckeye State; and the majority are located in southern Ohio; making for long trips. Executive Director Jim Dennis is recommending that only one trip per week be made to a state prison, when inmates need to be transported. In 2009, when CCNO reduced their prison trips by one day per week, it resulted in savings of over $65,000.
Other discussion focused on a report that Lucas County was looking at building their own county jail facility.
CCNO is looking at an upgrade in security at the regional jail, which is estimated to cost of about $640,000.
The current jail population stood at 509, which is about 80% of capacity.
