FIRST CASE OF WEST NILE VIRUS IN 2013 FOUND IN OHIO
Ohio’s mosquito population has not packed their bags for the summer, yet. The Ohio Department of Health reports they have confirmed the first case of West Nile Virus in the Buckeye State for 2013. A 72 year old female from Cuyahoga County has been hospitalized with the disease, and is now suffering from meningitis. Federal funding cuts have eliminated most testing of mosquitoes around Ohio; but health officials have reported that positive tests for West Nile Virus are down ten-fold from last year at this time. Some key steps to avoiding mosquito bites are to use insect repellant, empty containers that hold water in your yard and neighborhood, and wear long sleeves and pants after dusk. Light colors are also least attractive to mosquitoes. Some of the unique symptoms of West Nile Virus include neck stiffness and disorientation.
